‘CNN Hero of the Year’ Robin Lim to visit Fairfield

Nov 08, 2012

“CNN Hero of the Year,” Robin Lim, a midwife and owner of two nonprofit clinics in Bali, will be embarking on a U.S. speaking tour, with multiple public events during November across Iowa.

Plus, a free showing of the award-winning documentary film “Guerrilla Midwife” by Deja Bernhardt, about the work of Lim is set for 8 p.m. today at the Fairfield Public Library.

Lim is best known for her CNN award and as an acclaimed midwife and advocate for midwifery and gentle birth techniques. She recently received the Alexander Langer Peace Award and will soon be named “Midwife of the Year” from the Association for Prenatal and Perinatal Pychology and Health. She also is an accomplished writer, with more than a dozen published books to her credit.

Her many accolades stem from her work with Bumi Sehat, the nonprofit birthing centers and free clinics she operates in Bali. The clinics not only delivered 530 babies last year, they also expanded services to include community health outreach, elderly yoga, birth attendant training, disaster preparedness support, acupuncture and homeopathic medicine, youth education, village-based recycling and organic gardening.

“The CNN Hero Award has helped me to reach a tremendous number of health care providers and share a vision of more loving, effective care with them,” Lim said. “In Iowa, midwifery is very controversial, and I hope to shed some good light on the evidence-based medical fact that giving birth at home or at a childbirth center with a skilled midwife in attendance has been found by the research to be more than safe.”

Lim hopes to carry her message to Iowa, where she votes and still calls home, to raise awareness for midwifery and maternity issues.

She will be giving a free presentation about her work, the importance and impact of midwives and gentle, natural birth at 7 p.m. Sunday at the SEC Auditorium in the Student Education Center in Des Moines.

In Fairfield, she will speak about her work and be honored by Mayor Ed Malloy as he proclaims Tuesday “Robin Lim Day,” at 8 p.m. at the Fairfield Arts & Convnetion Center’s Stephen Sondheim Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free.

Wednesday, Lim will speak about becoming a hero by pursuing dreams and passions at Maharishi School of the Age of Enlightenment.

Liam will speak to Fairfield High School students on pursuing their dreams and passions at 9 a.m. Nov. 15.
