COLUMBUS JUNCTION – The subject of a police pursuit on Monday died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to police reports, Cody France, 39, of Muscatine, led police on a high speed chance Monday, which ended when he shot himself.

The Louisa County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a disturbance at a residence in rural Columbus Junction located in the 18000 block of County Road X17, at approximately 6:37 p.m. The individual causing the disturbance was indicated to be France.

About five minutes later, the caller advised police that France had fired off several rounds at her with a semi-automatic handgun. France left the scene driving a tan Toyota sport utility vehicle. Deputies observed the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. France refused to pull over and a vehicle pursuit ensued, reaching speeds of approximately 80 miles an hour, according to police reports.

The Muscatine County Sherrif’s Office assisted in the pursuit and a trooper with the Iowa State Patrol was able to deploy tire deflation sticks, deflating one of the driver’s front tires. France continued to try to elude police, eventually coming to rest in a farm field northeast of Fredonia.

Deputies attempted to establish communication with France, but were enable to. A tactical team approached the suspect’s vehicle and found France deceased in the front seat.

It was later determined that France died from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Besides France, no other casualty’s or physical injuries occurred during the incident.

Law enforcement consider the incident a family dispute and not a random act. An investigation is still ongoing, however.

Agencies assisting the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office included the Iowa State Patrol, Muscatine County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Muscatine Police Department, Columbus Junction Police Department, Winfield Police Department and the Columbus Junction Ambulance Service.
