Come out for final FHS soccer matches of season

To the editor:

I would like to thank Allan Mandell (sports editor) for the great job he has been doing covering all the high school sports since he has come on board with The Ledger. He has made the sports page fun to read now and has involved the athletes point of views in the articles more than any other sports editor. Thank you very much for the awesome coverage.

I would also like to invite the public to come to the last few home soccer meets of the season. I’ve heard a lot of comments that it’s not hard to play soccer or it’s boring to watch, but it is a very physical game and can be very exciting. Unlike football, the soccer athletes don’t wear any protective pads or headgear except for shin guards and they end up on the ground a lot and there is considerable pushing and elbowing that cause bruises to show off afterwards.

Soccer is a very physical game and takes great stamina to play. The players have certain positions, but are running up and down the length of the soccer(football) field all the time. They play 40 minutes halves with no time outs and a 10 minute half time. It takes a lot of coordination to run while dribbling the ball with your foot at the same time and keeping an eye on your teammates and the opponents all the time. After a lot of practice, the players have a sense of where their teammates will be to receive the ball. They play regardless of weather and parents cheer them on from the stands.

Please come support the soccer teams as the season winds down. The boys’ home games left are today, May 4 at 5:30 p.m., and May 15 at 5 p.m., which is boys’ seniors recognition night. The girls’ home games left are May 11 at 5:30 p.m. and May 18 at 5 p.m., which is girls’ senior recognition night.

It is a great sport to watch.. come give it a try.
