Conger, Slaney earn titles at WACO

Jan 15, 2013

WAYLAND — Pekin junior Trenton Conger claimed his first ever wall chart at the WACO Warrior Invitational Saturday in Wayland.

Conger, who had made the championship round of tournaments twice before, became a first-time tournament champion at 195 pounds. The Panther won by fall in 52 ticks vs. Iowa City Regina’s Elliot Halsch in the championship round to cap a three-pin day.

Conger’s senior teammate Thomas Slaney also joined him atop the podium, earning a tournament title at 182 pounds. Slaney found himself down in his finals match vs. English Valleys’ Seth Kerr before rallying back for a pin in 3:06. Conger also won by fall in the semifinal round.

Conger and Slaney were just two pieces of an outstanding puzzle for the Panthers Saturday as they finished fifth in the final team standings with 119 points. Davis County won the title with 177, Iowa City Regina was runner-up with 175 and Tri-County/ Montezuma finished third with 152 points.

“Saturday was probably the best we’ve wrestled as a team. Not one of our kids gave up, and five of them were behind in matches only to come back for pins,” Pekin head coach Al Chapman said. “Team-wise, it was a big step forward and the coaching staff was very pleased.”

Pekin senior Austyn Vogel finished runner-up at 145 pounds, falling to Ryan Joint of West Central Valley in the championship round.

Another first for Pekin came from senior Tayte Schoff, who for the first time in his career medaled in a tournament. The 138-pounder won via 12-8 decision in the third-place consolation match.

Brandon Baayen finished fourth at 113 pounds, Scott Entsminger was fifth at 152 and Chase Earnest ended up sixth at 132 pounds.

The Panther wrestlers return to their home mat Thursday for Senior Night vs. Highland and WACO. Four senior wrestlers and one manager will be honored.

“We need to make sure we have the right attitude headed into Thursday for our seniors,” Chapman added. “We need to do everything we can to go 2-0 [as a team].”
