Council offers city administrator job

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Oct 19, 2017

The Fairfield City Council appears poised to announce a new city administrator.

The council held a special meeting Wednesday to select a city administrator. The council had interviewed four finalists for the job Friday and Saturday, and offered the position to one of those four.

On Monday, the person offered the job withdrew his name from consideration. Mayor Ed Malloy said the applicant did not provide many details about why.

“There are always financial and family concerns about moving, and he just couldn’t work it out,” Malloy said.

Malloy said the councilors had a clear No. 2 candidate in mind even before their top choice bowed out. When the councilors convened Wednesday, they voted to offer the job to that person.

Malloy said the city expects to hear a final decision from that candidate later today.

The city hired Callahan Municipal Consultants to find a group of finalists for the council to interview.

The next city administrator will fill the shoes left by Mike Harmon, who resigned his post Aug. 18 to become the city administrator in Spearfish, South Dakota. Malloy said City Clerk Joy Messer and department heads have divided the city administrator’s responsibilities in the two months since Harmon’s departure.
