Dahlias are glorious now

To the editor:

Dahlia lovers unite! It’s nearing the end of the dahlia season. They are glorious right now, so take the time to go visit them.

The Fairfield Dahlia Project has several sites around town (look for the signs). The biggest planting is the corner of C Street and Jefferson Avenue.

There are several at the corner of Fifth and Grimes and a few at 507 E Lowe.

There are others around town, too. Look for a fundraiser for the project at the farmer’s market soon.

The dedicated “Dahlia Whisperer” Al Gabis not only prepared and planted all these beautiful flowers, but with the drought he hauled water from the city to hand water the big plots.

Why? He inspired a group of people to share his desire to shower the community in the beauty these beautiful flowers provide.

All the bulbs will all need to be dug up and stored when it gets cold.

It is a community project so if anyone would like to help dig dahlias in exchange for some tubers, just call Colleen at 472-7010 or Al at 641-455-1363.
