An Ottumwa man was arrested Thursday after leading Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies on a high speed chase.

At 2:11 p.m., a deputy with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to pull over a pink Mazda four-door on Fourth Street in Batavia for no license plates, according to a news release from Jefferson County Attorney Tim Dille.

Upon activation of emergency lights, the driver of the Mazda accelerated and passed another vehicle on Fourth Street eluding the deputy. A pursuit ensued taking deputies and other law enforcement through the west side of Jefferson County, into Wapello County and finally ending in the city of Ottumwa.

The passenger of the vehicle was taken into custody by Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, and the driver was taken into custody by the Iowa State Patrol and brought back to Jefferson County.

The driver of the vehicle was 22-year-old Ryan Lawrence Gillen of Ottumwa. Gillen was charged in Jefferson County with aggravated eluding, driving while barred, driving while revoked, reckless driving, speeding and no registration.

Gillen remains in custody in the Jefferson County Jail.

Those assisting Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office were Fairfield Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Wapello, Davis and Van Buren county sheriff’s offices, Ottumwa Police and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement.

A criminal charge is only an accusation and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
