Digger wasp program planned

Jul 21, 2017

Jefferson County Conservation has updated its plans for events scheduled next week, “Bug Week at Jefferson County Park.”

The first program is “Dragonflies & Damselflies” planned at 10:30 a.m. and again at 4 p.m. Monday beginning in the Jefferson County Park Nature Center before moving outdoors. Attendees will learn how to identify some of the local species and learn about their life cycle. The program is geared for adults, but youth are welcome. The program is free and no registration is necessary.

A program, “Cicada Killers at Waterworks Park,” is now planned at 10 a.m. Tuesday. At least three different species of wasps construct nests in the ground in Iowa. These “digger wasps” include the cicada killer wasp, the largest wasp found here. While these wasps are intimidating because of their size, they are really nothing to be feared: the males have no stingers, and the females are non-aggressive and are more interested in bagging cicadas in which to lay their eggs. Meet entomologist Moni Hayne and Jefferson County Naturalist Therese Cummiskey at Waterworks Park to see these insects at work in the sand on the beach. The program is free and no registration is necessary.

“Moth Night” is set for Wednesday. The first session is at 10-11 p.m., and the second runs from 11:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. beginning in the nature center. Children must be accompanied by an adult. The program is free and no registration is required.

“Butterflies,” with sessions set at 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Thursday, begins in the nature center before moving outdoors for a hike to identify local species. The program is geared to adults, but youth are welcome. The program is free and no registration is necessary.
