Donations sought for Serve Outdoors annual banquet, auction

Jan 16, 2014

The Des Moines River Valley Chapter of Service Outdoors will have its annual fund-raising event at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Roberts Memorial Center on the Van Buren County Fairgrounds in Keosauqua.

The event will include a meal, with the meat provided; entertainment, with stories and games; and an auction.

Membership in the organization is not required to attend the banquet and auction. Admission to the family-friendly event is a free-will donation.

“The committee greatly appreciates all the donations we have received for our past events,” said Matt Johnson, a member of the committee. “Many come in the night of the banquet, and as you help us continue to grow, we would ask assistance: if anyone has a donation item they would like to give — to better plan our event — the committee requests to obtain the item ahead of time.”

To donate an item, call Johnson at 919-4211, John Hamstreet at 319-288-0814 or Cork Battey at 319-293-2599.

Serve Outdoors provides hunting and fishing opportunities to people, with disabilities, who could not participate otherwise.

Johnson said the Serve Outdoors committee tries to make each event as enjoyable as possible for all who attend, and “your help can make this happen.”

“It’s been a real blessing to see how everyone has helped us grow and serve the disabled, the youth, the elderly, as well as our honored disabled veterans,” said Johnson. “Our hunters and fishermen, that the good lord lets us serve, pay us back with the most wonderful smiles and often say ‘I thought I’d never be able to go hunting or fishing again, but you people made it happen, and I thank you so much!’ That’s the best return we could ever receive on our money — your money and gifts.”
