Drug Take-Back Saturday at Hy-Vee

Oct 19, 2016

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the pharmacy at Fairfield Hy-Vee Food & Drug Store to provide a safe way to dispose of unused prescription pills Saturday.

During the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, anyone can drop off unused pills to the Hy-Vee pharmacy from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Those dropping off medications do not need to reside in Jefferson County; and no questions are asked.

The safe disposal of unused or unneeded pills is vital to reduce the misuse of prescription drugs, say organizers.

The misuse of prescription drugs is a national public health crisis, including Jefferson County, where, in a recent Iowa Youth Survey, eighth-graders reported misusing prescription medicatijons at a higher rate than the state average.

Nationally, most of the prescription drugs misused by teens come from family medicine cabinets and from friends.

For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the Drug Take-Back Day event, go to www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html or call the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office at 472-4146.
