Dutch Oven cook off registration underway

Feb 28, 2018

Jefferson County Conservation will host its 10th annual Spring Into Summer Dutch Oven Cook Off May 19 at Jefferson County Park.

Registration is underway, with the deadline set for May 11; no late entries will be accepted.

The competition will have both novice and “well-seasoned” divisions.

Novices will be judged separately and will compete for first- and second-place prize money, $75 and $50 respectively, in two categories: desserts; and main dish. Novices can compete in one or both categories; there is a $5 fee for each category.

“Well-seasoned” cooks will compete for first-, second- and third-place ($100, $75 and $50) in three categories: breakfast; desserts; and cook’s choice.

“Cook’s choice is just a nice way of saying ‘make us your best dish’ — the dish your friends and family all ‘ooo’ and ‘ahhh’ over,” said Jefferson County Naturalist Therese Cummiskey, one of the organizers. “It just can’t be a dessert or breakfast.”

The well-seasoned competitors can enter one, two or all three of the categories, with a $5 fee for each category.

All cooking must be done in a Dutch oven, and everything cooked must be presented to the judges.

Individual cooks and teams are welcome. Youth ages 10-17 can complete with an adult supervisor on the team.

Contestants can set up as early as 7 a.m. May 19, and the cooking starts immediately after the 9 a.m. cooks’ meeting.

The public is invited to come and visit with the cooks. Individuals can pay a fee that will allow them to sample the food after the initial judging is done.

Information and registration also is available by contacting Cummiskey at 472-4421 or therese@jeffersoncountyconservation.com.
