Dutch oven cook-off Saturday

May 14, 2018
PHOTO SUBMITTED Competitors prepare a dish for the Spring Into Summer Dutch Oven Cook-of in 2017. This year’s event will be Saturday at Jefferson County Park.

Jefferson County Conservation will host its 10th annual Spring Into Summer Dutch Oven Cook-off Saturday at Jefferson County Park.

Contestants will be setting up as early as 7 a.m. and the cooking starts immediately after the 9 a.m. cooks’ meeting, and the first round of judging is at 11:15 a.m.

The public is invited to come and visit with the cooks and taste-test more than 40 breakfast, dessert and cook’s-choice dishes after the initial judging is done.

The taste-testing is available by paying a fee: 13-years-old to adults, $5; 7- to 12-years-old, $2; and 6-years-old and younger, $1. Proceeds from the taste-testing go to benefit the Cedar Creek Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.

The competition will have both novice and “well-seasoned” divisions.

Novices will be judged separately and will compete for first- and second-place prize money, $75 and $50 respectively, in two categories: desserts; and main dish.

“Well-seasoned” cooks will compete for first-, second- and third-place ($100, $75 and $50) in three categories: breakfast; desserts; and cook’s choice.

“Cook’s choice is just a nice way of saying ‘make us your best dish’ — the dish your friends and family all ‘ooo’ and ‘ahhh’ over,” said Jefferson County Naturalist Therese Cummiskey, one of the organizers. “It just can’t be a dessert or breakfast.”

The well-seasoned competitors can enter one, two or all three of the categories.

All cooking must be done in a Dutch oven, and everything cooked must be presented to the judges.

Registration for the competition ended Friday.

For more details about the cook off, visit www.jeffersoncountyconservation.com and click on “What’s New & Educational Programs.”

Information and registration also is available by contacting Cummiskey at 472-4421 or therese@jeffersoncountyconservation.com.
