OTTUMWA – Two Eldon men were arrested Tuesday morning for attempting to rob a gas station south of Ottumwa.

According to the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, Jacob Bonner, 18, and Gabriel Clarkson, 18, were taken into custody and charged with first degree robbery, a Class B felony.

At approximately 1:01 a.m. that morning, Wapello County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from BP Gas Station south of Ottumwa located on Highway 63. The caller reported that a male subject had entered the gas station and pointed a handgun at the caller. The caller advised the male subject had stolen some cigarettes after being unsuccessful in opening the cash register.

The caller advised the vehicle left north on Highway 63 and provided Wapello County Dispatch with a description of the vehicle that the male subject was seen getting into.

A short time later, Ottumwa Police officers saw a vehicle matching the description northbound on Madison Avenue in Ottumwa. They stopped the vehicle and arrested the two men.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
