Fairfield and Van Buren play The Preserve

By Justin Webster | Apr 27, 2018

The Fairfield and Van Buren boys’ teams golfed The Preserve at Lake Rathbun, the fifth toughest public course in Iowa, Thursday evening, with the Trojans finishing in 12th overall with a 382, 11 strokes behind the Warriors who tied Albia for 10th with a 371.

While you might think Van Buren Head Coach Tony Vandergriff would use this opportunity to raz his buddy, Trojan skipper Mick Flattery, the Warriors are more focused inward.

“Our main concern is ourselves and trying to get better and more consistent. We play two or three good holes and then have a bad one and we just have to get rid of that,” said the Warrior leader.

“We have four tough 18 hole meets coming up,” Vandergriff added. “That includes our own on Saturday against Central Lee, Notre Dame, Davis County and Clarke.”

As for Thursday’s meet, it was very windy and narrow with the Warriors struggling to get used to the big and fast greens, while the Trojans started strong with four guys shooting in the 40’s on the front nine.

When all was said and done, Brad Smithburg shot the low round for Fairfield with a 91 that included seven pars, earning him team medalist honors for the first time, something Flattery thought was “great to see.”

Aaron Haines had five pars on his way to a 94, just ahead of Jackson Weaton’s four-par 97 and Jeremy Criles’ 100 that featured a 48 on the front nine.

Overall Medalist was Kyle Linder from Nevada who posted a 75.

“It’s going to be good competition,” said Vandegriff. “And that’s why I put them in these circumstances.

It’s good to play 18 holes finally and get our legs under us.”
