Fairfield Art Association’s membership show opens

Dec 04, 2013
PHOTO SUBMITED Laura Weinberg painted her 12-inch-by-12-inch canvas for the Fairfield Art Association’s “12 X 12 Canvas Exhibit” with blue, pink and green flowers. The exhibit opens Friday evening at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center’s Main Gallery.

The Fairfield Art Association has broken with tradition in its annual 2013 Membership Exhibit.

After 48 years of presenting the work of members in any format the artist submits, the Fairfield Art Association board decided on a “12 X 12 Canvas Exhibit.”

Association members were provided a 12-inch-by-12-inch canvas, and asked to create one original entry in any media. The only requirements were the work could not extend beyond 1 inch in any direction, the works must be for sale and priced no more than $300.

The canvas exhibit will be in the Main Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center and will open with a reception for the artists and community from 6-8 p.m. Friday.

Viewers are invited to vote for a “People’s Choice Award” Friday through Jan. 10. The favorite piece will win the artist two tickets to the Tracy Lawrence show Jan. 18 at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.

The canvas exhibit will remain on display through February, with four cash “Outstanding Art Awards” selected by judge Anne Klingensmith and presented at the Jan. 3 art walk.

Klingensmith is a well-known and award-winning printmaker and art professor at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant. She has been co-director of the art gallery in the PEO Building in Mount Pleasant since 1987.

Fifty participating artists have created works in oil pastel, photography, digital art, watercolor, acrylic, oil, collage and mixed media. “This has turned out to be a fun and exciting change for the [art association] Membership Show,” said Suzan Kessel, the art associations volunteer director. “Visitors to the gallery will enjoy seeing all the talent and variety of entries.” Exhibiting artists include; John Preston, Reny Parker, Diane Finwick, Holly Moore, Suzan Kessel, Aleen Hedge, Debbie Finney, Janet Peck, Irene Murphy, Cynthia Ballou, Paulette Buckingham, Laura Weinberg, Gin Lammert, Mark Shafer, Kathleen Tachet, Candy DeFries, Phil Hirschler, Elaine Duncan, Victoria Gautherat, Terri Drobny, Ann Porter, Care Connet, David Kraemer, Kathy Ameilien, Randall McVey, Pamela Kohl, Sasha Luse, Kemlyn Tan Bappe, Dietrich Bonhoeffer Bappe, Eileen Hawthorne, Werner Elmker, Anne Shook, Kella J.
