Fairfield bowlers conquer Oskaloosa meet

By ALLYUS FRITZ/Ledger sports editor | Jan 21, 2014

Oily lanes can be tricky to the uninitiated.

The Fairfield varsity bowling team had success Saturday in Oskaloosa, earning three victories out of a possible four. The varsity girls defeated both Washington and Oskaloosa, while the boys only came away with a victory over the Demons. The team had this success while trying to feel out new lanes.

The younger bowlers on the roster had some trouble adjusting to Oskaloosa’s synthetic lanes after using Fairfield’s wooden lanes for such a long period of time.

“The oil pattern caused difficulty for several of our bowlers,” Fairfield bowling coach Lisa Greenig said. “Some of our bowlers typically shoot for the first arrow on their strike ball. Due to the oil on the lanes, the ball slid and didn’t react in time to hit the pocket.”

This sliding is like a car sliding on ice.

“When this happens, bowlers need to move their starting position on the approach and change their target on the lane,” Greenig said. “Experience will be the best teacher for this group. In time they will learn to make adjustments sooner.”

Even with the lack of experience, many of the Trojan bowlers performed above their season averages. Fairfield’s Shannon Morrissey led the girls’ team with an overall 362 in the first round. The boys’ team was led by Kyle Ruckman, who cracked the 200 barrier in his first game and finished with a 397 in round one.
