Fairfield boys jump-start offense in Keokuk

Feb 04, 2013

KEOKUK — Less than a week after scoring just 24 points against Keokuk, Fairfield once again faced the Chiefs in an away game Friday.

This time, there would be plenty of offense from the visiting Trojans, just not enough as they fell to Keokuk 67-53.

The Trojans shot a much-improved 19-for-40 from the field, including 10 of 15 from 3-point land. In the two teams’ first meeting last Monday, the Trojans shot 5-for-35.

“We made shots, and that was the whole difference. We got similar looks in both games, but this time we knocked them down,” said Fairfield head coach Tyler Miklo. “Our confidence continues to grow, and that’s good to see.”

Leading the way for Fairfield was senior Darrin Dimmitt with 14 points off 4-for-5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc. Junior Matt Carr made 3 of 4 3-point attempts to score 10 points.

The improved offensive performance translated into a 17-11 lead after one quarter for Fairfield, which stretched its lead to 20-11 at the start of the second.

“We came out really solid and really ready to play,” said Miklo. “A little fatigue hit us and we just didn’t rebound and didn’t take good shots, but we continued to battle.”

The quick start gave way to a scoreless drought, and the Trojans scored just six points in the entire second quarter. Keokuk led 30-23 at halftime and out-scored Fairfield 21-13 in the third quarter to grab a double-digit lead.

Also for Fairfield, Spencer Peterman scored nine points to go with eight boards, and Vince Horras had five points and eight rebounds. Joe Hietpas had five points and four rebounds, Jordan Whitney added five points and Jordan Reid scored three.

Pella downs Trojans

PELLA — Fairfield kept pace with Pella in every quarter but one Saturday, resulting in a 61-51 loss on the road.

The Trojans hung with Pella through the first half and trailed just 33-30 at the break, but a six-point third quarter ended up being the difference as Fairfield lost its seventh straight. Holding a 45-36 lead after three, Pella out-scored Fairfield 16-15 in the final eight minutes to hold off the eager Trojans.

“It was the same deal that killed us Friday,” Fairfield head coach Tyler Miklo said. “There was a four-minute stretch where we made uncharacteristic mistakes and missed some easy shots. If we’re going to compete with these teams, we can’t go through four-minute lapses.”

Spencer Peterman had one of the best games of his career, finishing with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. He also shot 10 of 12 from the field.

“Spencer was aggressive going to the rim. The refs were letting the teams play aggressively, and he handled it real well,” said Miklo.

Another Trojan senior, Darrin Dimmitt, scored 12 points with 4-for-4 free throw shooting to earn Miklo’s acclaim.

“Darrin has really stepped up his game. You can tell our seniors are playing with some urgency as we finish the regular season, and hopefully we see more of that in the final weeks,” Miklo said.

Fairfield’s Matt Carr scored six points, Jordan Whitney supplied five points and Joe Hietpas finished with a team-high three assists.

Despite the back-to-back losses, Miklo felt there was still plenty of positives to take away from the weekend slate.

“Those were two very good teams we competed against, and I feel we made some positive strides,” he said.

The Trojans (3-15, 1-6 SEC) head to Chariton Tuesday for a non-conference game.
