The Fairfield boys’ basketball team improved their record to 12-8 overall with a 58-56 victory at Fort Madison Friday, guaranteeing the Trojans’ first winning season since 2008.

Head Coach Mick Flattery’s squad trailed 15-14 after eight minutes, and went into the locker room down 28-24 after getting outscored again in the second 13-10.

A 16-12 advantage in the third quarter, squared up the score at 40 a piece and allowed the Trojans to focus on winning the fourth quarter alone, instead of trying to dig themselves out of a deficit.

After Carson Crile drove to the basket and gave Fairfield the lead with 1:44 remaining, Dante Cingire went 6-6 at the free throw line in the final 1:22 to keep a slim lead for the Trojans.

Junior Austin Simpson had a career-game with 28 points on 10-13 shooting from the field and 8-10 from foul line, including two free throws with :05 left to extend the Fairfield advantage to 58-53.

Simpson also had 11 rebounds, three assists and three blocks to complete his stat line.

Crile ended the game with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists; Cingire had 10 points, two steals and two assists; Tristin Waugh had four points, five rebounds, and played a major role in slowing down the Bloodhounds main offensive weapon with the help of Cole Engle; Collin Breen had two points and two steals and also had a large role defensively; Drew Martin rounded out the scoring with two points as well.

The Trojans will conclude the regular season on the road at 9-10 Knoxville Thursday, and while they’ll try to get win No. 13 of the season, they have secured second place in the SEC with a 6-2 record.
