The Fairfield cross-country team traveled to Oskaloosa Tuesday.

The competition present at the meet may be the toughest that Fairfield has faced all season.

“We knew coming into this meet that there were going to be some great teams and individuals,” Fairfield cross-country coach Jerrod Belzer said. “But I think our kids were looking forward to the challenge.”

The Trojan girls finished fourth overall. Newton High school finished just one point ahead of Fairfield.

Taylor Ferrel was Fairfield’s leading runner, placing 10th with the time of 17:07.

“Taylor Ferrel continues to be the leader that we need on our team,” Belzer said. “Her goal for the night was a top 10 finish so to accomplish that was a big positive for her.”

The Fairfield boys didn’t have as much luck as the girls and finished ninth overall. Nathan Haerr was the Trojans’ leading runner, placing 19th with the time of 18:43. Ben Boender finished in 32nd.

“Nathan Haerr had another big race for our guys,” Belzer said. “He gives it 100 percent all the time and he’s going to continue to improve with each and every meet.

“I know the times and places may not be the greatest, but our guys are really coming along well. We lost all of our varsity guys from last year and that’s not easy to replace.”
