Spectators en route to take in the Fairfield Invite had to exercise as well.

Vehicles were parked up and down B Street’s rolling hills. Car after car made U-turns and was caught up in hectic traffic, as each bystander tried to park as quickly as possible. The line of cars snaked away from Waterworks Park and was long enough on each end of the street that the park was no longer visible.

“Wow,” said two Danville-New London parents new to the cross-country scene. “I had no idea there would be this many people.”

Individuals shuffled at a fast pace along the sidewalks in order to witness the initial race’s beginning. After all, there were races to watch and pictures to take.

Pekin won the A girl’s race, and it wasn’t even close. Pekin amassed a total score of 20, while second place Wapello scored 82. Wapello was followed by Louisa-Muscatine, Lone Tree, Danville-New London and Cardinal.

“This is maybe the best group of girls that I’ve ever had,” Pekin cross-country coach Davis Eidahl said.

Pekin’s Taylor Lock finished first, followed closely by teammate Shae Dahlstrom. Seven Pekin girls finished in the top 10.

“You always like to compare times from last year,” Eidahl said. “But what I liked about the race was that we had seven runners that were near each other and who ran together.”

Both AA races belonged to Mount Pleasant. Ellie Conrad won the girl’s race. Teammates Beth Wells and Chloe Haffarnan finished fourth and fifth. On the boys side, Logan Murray won by finishing the race 32 seconds before the next challenger crossed the finish line. The next three runners were from Fort Madison, who won the overall boys title. The Mount Pleasant girls won the AA team title.

Fairfield’s Taylor Ferrel, Samantha Fritz and Ashlyn Elmore all had top 10 finishes. Maggie Ferrel had a strong race, finishing 15th. Tracy Anderman and Chloe Spalla came in at 23rd and 24th. Trojans cross-country coach Jerrod Belzer is hoping for more out of the latter runners.

“Our girls are running pretty well right now, but we certainly feel like we can get more out of our five, six and seven spots,” Belzer said. “I have full faith that those girls will start running closer and closer to our three and four runners. When they do, great things will happen for us.”

As for the boys, Fairfield finished fourth overall. Benjamin Boender finished in 16th position and was the best Trojan. Nathan Hoerr came later in 20th.

“Nathan Haerr continues to be a big part of our boys team,” Belzer said. “He’s another first year senior, but he’s been a great leader and I think he’s one that will make big strides as the season goes on.”

Wapello won the A boy’s race. Pekin came in fifth and Maharishi School wound up eighth. Pekin’s Austin Farris finished seventh.
