Fairfield falls, but not without a fight

By Justin Webster | Jan 10, 2018

The Fairfield basketbll team is proving to themselves that they can play with anyone after games like Tuesday nights’ 68-58 loss at Class 2A’s No. 10 ranked team Prairie City-Monroe.

Head Coach Mick Flattery said, “We got behind PCM 21-11 after the first period and allowed the Mustangs to stretch their lead to 18.” He added, “We switched defenses, and went on a 15-0 run to make it 29-26 at the half. It was really great to see the guys turn on the competitiveness at that time and avoid getting blown out.”

The Trojans kept it close throughout the third, trailing by just a bucket or two at most.

Unfortunately, the Mustangs knocked down their free throws in the fourth quarter to avoid a Fairfield comeback and hold on for the 10-point victory.

Senior Dante Cingere continued his efficient output while tallying a team-high 19 points. Junior Austin Simpson recovered from a minor ankle injury Friday to score 13 points and grab nine rebounds. Junior Carson Crile had just five points, but accumulated a team-high eight rebounds while dishing three assists and making two steals.

Four other juniors recorded stats. Collin Breen had eight points and four boards, Mark Diers had six and two, Tristin Waugh tallied five points and Cole Engle had one basket, five rebounds and two assists.

The Trojans are now 4-6 overall, but remain 3-1 in SEC play. They will have an opportunity to add another conference win to their resume Friday night when they host Mt. Pleasant for their Green Out game that will also feature walking tacos to raise money for a college scholarship for a student pursuing an education in Agriculture.

Tipoff is typically around 7:30 p.m. but I encourage you to come closer to 6 p.m. for the girls’ game and the Green Out activities and speakers that will take place between the two varsity games Friday evening.
