O’Carroll, the Trojans’ No. 3 singles player, cruised to an 8-2 singles victory before clinching the meet-deciding No. 1 doubles match alongside Haylee Gilpin.

The rain didn’t quite hold off, but the Fairfield girls’ tennis team did just enough to hold off Ottumwa’s JV squad for its first meet victory of the season Monday.

Competing at the Fairfield Middle School courts, the Trojans picked up singles wins from Haylee Gilpin, Karley Williams, Kim O’Carroll and Courtney Laux. Gilpin and O’Carroll clinched the meet victory with a win in doubles play.

Gilpin won her first singles match of the season at the No. 1 spot, dispatching of Ottumwa’s Beth Overturf 8-4. Karley Williams rolled to her second straight win at No. 2 with an 8-6 victory over Megan Black, and Kim O’Carroll completed the 1-2-3 punch grabbing an 8-2 victory at No. 3.

“Kim really had a great first win of the season. She worked hard and never let her opponent take it away from her,” Fairfield head coach Heidi Grunwald said. “Karley and Haylee also came through with nice wins.”

Courtney Laux’s 8-6 win at No. 5 singles gave the Trojans a 4-2 lead headed into doubles play, where Gilpin and O’Carroll put Ottumwa away for good with an 8-3 win vs. Ottumwa’s No. 1 duo of Overturf and Erica Swanson.

In JV action, Meghan Shelangoski and Madison Soupiset earned a 6-1 victory over Ottumwa’s Kaelan Whitlow and Kelsey Robinson at No. 4 doubles. The duo also won a pair of 4-0 matches.

The No. 9 doubles team of Ashlee Hardeman and Arielle Smith defeated Ottumwa’s Lillian Rudd and Olivia Jeffrey 6-4 before beating Miranda Wilson and Katie Hornfleck by a 4-3 score. Emma Lemlin and Harley Cook teamed up for a 6-1 doubles win, and Abby Shaner and Sierra Simmons earned a 6-4 win. Audry Hammes and Bryana Gridley won 4-1 in their doubles match.

The Trojans will look to carry over their momentum from their first win into today’s dual at Southeast Conference rival Fort Madison.

“What a great first win of the season. We hope to do the same with Fort Madison tonight,” Grunwald added.
