The Fairfield JV Black softball team was hit with seven errors in the nightcap Thursday, and Ottumwa saved its best for last to sweep the host Trojans 2-1 and 16-8.

Fairfield led the first game 1-0, but Ottumwa took the lead with two runs scored in the top of the fifth. The Trojans put runners on second and third in the bottom of the fifth but weren’t able to capitalize.

“Our offense had a couple of opportunities, but they just couldn’t come up with the run support at the right time,” said coach Lisa Greenig.

The Trojans stranded eight runners on base in the first game, and later stranded six in the nightcap.

Brynna Bowman pitched a complete game in the opener, walking six and giving up two hits. She struck out three.

Bowman also contributed from the batter’s box and tallied one base knock. Kelsey Roberts had a pair of singles and scored once, and Taylor Ferrel legged out a double.

Haley Beard took the loss for the Trojans in the five-inning second game. Ottumwa managed 16 hits in the game while taking advantage of Fairfield’s seven errors.

The Trojan JV squad has the weekend off, but the freshman squad will travel to Davis County for a 5:30 p.m. game Tuesday.
