Fairfield knocks off Grinnell 6-2

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Jul 11, 2017
Cam Baumann throws a pitch earlier this season. Baumann baffled Grinnell in his five innings of work, striking out 11 while only allowing one hit.

The regular season is winding down for Fairfield’s baseball team, and the Trojans look poised to make a deep postseason run. They have been playing their best ball of the season down the stretch. After a minor bump in the road in mid-June when the team went 1-4 over a five-game stretch, the Trojans are 13-3 and scored in double digits eight times in that span.

Fairfield’s most recent victim was Grinnell, whom it defeated 6-2 Monday in the final regular season home game of the year. Fans were treated to a spectacular pitching performance by senior Cam Baumann, who will pitch for the University of Iowa next year. Baumann struck out 11 batters in five innings on the mound. He allowed only one run on one hit with two walks.

Cam has held opposing batters to a team-low .189 average. His 69 strikeouts are by far the most in the conference. The next highest is Keokuk’s Ethan Blaise, who has 40 strikes in eight more innings than Baumann.

Caden Jones pitched the final two innings against Grinnell, allowing one unearned run on no hits with one walk and two strikeouts. “Really good pitching from Cam tonight with 11 strikeouts and only allowing 1 hit,” said Fairfield skipper Josh Allison. “We did a good job of playing team baseball offensively. We hit some balls really hard and a few of them turned into pretty loud outs.”

Kosta Papazoglou singled, walked and drove in two runs. Cade Lisk doubled and scored a run. Tristin Waugh went 2-3 with a single and a double, to go with a run and an RBI.

James Lyman singled, walked and scored a run. Baumann picked up an RBI. Hunter Hoskins went 2-4 with a run and a stolen base. Hunter Drish was 1-3 with a run.

The Trojans wrap up the regular season tonight in Oskaloosa. The location of the game has been changed to the Lacey Sports Complex, which is at 2055 230th St. There will not be admission gates. The change was made to accommodate Oskaloosa’s hosting of a regional softball final.

The junior varsity game will start at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game will follow.

The first round of districts begins at 5 p.m. Friday in Fairfield when Mt. Pleasant battles Keokuk. The Trojans will battle Fort Madison at the conclusion of that game. The winners from those two games will play each other in Fairfield at 7 p.m. Monday.
