Fairfield soccer squad wins two more contests

Apr 20, 2017

The Fairfield Trojan boys’ soccer team upped its season record to 4-1 with a Monday-night home win over Centerville and 6-1 road victory on Tuesday against Knoxville.

Against Centerville, Shawn Spurrier scored two goals and Dallas Peebler, Nicholas Frisbie, and Chaysten Titus each had one.

Also for Fairfield, Brayden Miller, Eric Swan and Jose Rojo each had an assist.

“It was a pretty good game overall,” said Trojan head coach Felisto Guezimane. “We controlled possession and were moving the ball around well.

“Shawn Spurrier controlled the midfield. Shawn is the guy on this team who practices as hard as he plays and it pays off. He leads us. And Eric Swan had a good game defensively.”

The Trojans, 2-0 in Southeastern Conference action, travel tonight to face rival Keokuk.

Postgame on Monday, Spurrier said, “I like to think of myself as the playmaker on the team, I’ve been told that I am. I see my role as maintaining control of the center of the field, scoring when I can and always hustling.

“It’s a confidence booster when I score goals but it’s obviously good for the team—and that’s what’s most important.”

Of the dominating 6-1 win over Knoxville, Guezimane said, “It was a great team performance.”

Fairfield led 4-1 at halftime.

“Knoxville had no answers on how to stop us,” Guezimane said. “They started the second half better than us and had better control of the game for a good 10-15 minutes, but were not able to crack our defense.

“We were very well organized defensively with the central defensive midfielders Austin Winslow and Jose Rojo providing good cover to the back four of Leone Gichure-Marira, Eric Swan, Kolten Webber and Kobe Cassens-Navesse.

“The wide players on each side, Chaysten Titus and Dallas Peebler, were also dropping to help out in covering the wings.

“Shawn Spurrier was the floater who provided the linkage between the defense/midfield and forwards.

“Once we regained control of the game, we scored the fifth goal before Eric Swan completely killed the game with a 20-yard well-placed shot to the bottom right corner to make it 6-1 with about 10 minutes left in the game.”

For Fairfield, Brayden Miller scored four goals and Spurrier tallied on a penalty kick.

Titus had two assists and Webber, Miller and Adrian Restrepo each had one. Keeper Brendon Lunsford had eight saves.
