Coach Diana Drish and the Fairfield volleyball team made quick work Wednesday night, winning 3-0 versus visiting Keokuk in the Class 4A Region 7’s opening round.

Although the Trojans swept the Chiefs, Coach Drish and her squad have bigger dreams than making the second round of the playoffs, which may explain why she gave me a very Greg Popovichian glare when I suggested to her, “You seemed to fire on all cylinders tonight?”

My second attempt with, “What would you have liked to see more of coach?” at least got a response.

“More communication,” said Drish. “More excitement. More enthusiasm.”

With Fairfield leading 10-5 in the first set and Keokuk playing relatively well, a point won by the Chiefs was reversed and awarded to the Trojans after an illegal shift. Instead of the Chiefs trailing by four with the serve, Fairfield kept the ball in Ashtyn Drish’s hands and the Trojans lead was extended to 11-5. I asked coach what she told her team during the long pause in play.

“I told them to worry about themselves,” said Drish. “Worry about our play and put the hammer down.”

That is exactly what the mighty Trojans did, winning the first set 25-13. The second set was even less close 25-8 and in the final set Fairfield prevailed 25-14.

Statistical leaders were Danae Drish serving 15-16 with six aces. Top hitter was Alison Godwin going 21-21 with nine kills. Ashtyn Drish had 18 assists, while Danae also led everyone with 20 digs.

Up next for the 24-8 Trojans is their current heel in 24-8 SEC rival Fort Madison. The Bloodhounds will host Fairfield Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the second round of the Class 4A Region 7 bracket.

Coach Drish added that she appreciated the crowd support Wednesday, and she looks forward to a huge crowd in Fort Madison Tuesday.
