Fairfield’s Jeffrey named SEC Player of the Year

By Justin Webster | Nov 09, 2017

Fairfield junior Kara Jeffrey is a busy bee. She was recently named MVP of the Fairfield Trojan volleyball team, first-team all-SEC and made the SEC academic all-conference team. The cherry on top was Jeffrey also being named Most Valuable Player of the entire Southeast Conference.

Statistically, Jeffrey was an all-around standout with 186 kills and 2.3 kills per set, each No. 4 in the league and her kill efficiency was 22.6 percent, good for sixth in the SEC. Her serve efficiency was 92.9 percent, with 32 aces and she tallied 237 assists as well.

Along with running track in the spring, Kara is preparing for basketball season but took a few minutes to discuss her recent accomplishments and her future plans.

Q) What did your off-season training look like heading into this fall?

A) All summer long I was doing hitting training in Cedar Rapids with the solo spike clinic. Fairfield has had open gym time, plus I went to the Tri-state camp in Mediapolis and the Iowa State camp in Ames.

Q) How does it help playing for a program like Fairfield?

A) I would say Diana has helped me build my skills up so I can work on all positions. To get the award it took a lot of work in the off-season, improving my setting and hitting skills since I mostly did hitting even into my freshman year. That’s been the big struggle with playing both positions, but Diana has helped me through it all.

Q) Where does your passion for the game come from?

A) I love volleyball, but I remember in middle school I didn’t like it that much. When I came to the high school, Nancy (Diers) was coaching in her last year with us, and I made varsity and I remember going to Diana’s house and she talked to me and helped coach me through it all. That’s when I really started loving the game, when I built all the relationships with the girls. Spending so much time playing year-round, I started to love it even more and now I want to play all the time.

Q) What do you see in your future?

A) I’d like to play in college.I’ve been looking at some things, but I’m going to start playing club ball this winter. This will be my first year doing that in a big city, but I’m going to keep working on volleyball all year while I play basketball and run track.
