Fairgrounds to host college, career fair

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | May 04, 2017

The Jefferson County Fairgrounds will host a career and college exploration fair from 2-4 p.m. Monday in the newly built Cambridge Learning Center.

County youth coordinator Rachel Wonderlich said the 4-H teen council is responsible for the event.

“We brainstormed some things that were lacking for youth in the community,” she said. “Youth don’t really know much about the careers available to them, so we came up with the idea to host a college and career exploration fair to make the information more readily available to our peers.”

Eight colleges and universities will have booths at the event. They are:

• Graceland University

• Truman State University

• Iowa School of Beauty

• Kirkwood Community College

• Maharishi University of Management

• Des Moines Area Community College

• Eastern Iowa Community Colleges, and

• Southeastern Community College.

Careers represented at the fair include: marketing analyst, loan officer, human resources, electrician, entrepreneur, nurse practitioner, child life specialist, agriculturalist, genetic scientist, medical coder, occupational therapist and stained glass artist.

Though the event is on a Monday afternoon during the school year, students in the Fairfield Community School District should be able to attend since they do not have school that day.

Wonderlich said she’s not aware of the Jefferson County Extension and Outreach Office hosting a career fair before. She said it will be one of the first events the Cambridge Learning Center has hosted.

“The Cambridge building gives us the opportunity to host a variety of events,” she said. “It has a large kitchen and the layout is set up nicely to host events like this. We’re fortunate this building is available to us.”
