Jefferson County Farm Bureau celebrated its 100th anniversary with food, games, music and education Saturday night at Maasdam Barns. Members of Maasdam Barns took the opportunity to demonstrate old farming practices, such as the one seen here where a horse-drawn pulley is used to lift hay bales into a barn. John Sandbothe, regional manager at Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, told the crowd gathered at the barns that Farm Bureau’s meetings had to be held at 2 p.m. when the organization began in 1917. Why? So the farmers could ride their horses home before dark.
