‘Farming with Tree Crops’ offered

Feb 21, 2018
PHOTO SUBMITTED Kathy Dice and Tom Wahl of Red Fern Farms in Wapello will present “Farming with Tree Crops” Saturday at Jefferson County Park Nature Center.

Jefferson County Conservation will present “Farming with Tree Crops” at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jefferson County Park Nature Center.

Husband and wife team Tom Wahl and Kathy Dice, co-owners of Red Fern Farms in Wapello, will present a free program about the role of trees in sustainable agriculture.

For more than 25 years, Red Fern Farm has pioneered a range of tree crops, such as chestnuts, paws paws, persimmons and others, as well as pioneered agroforestry practices.

The couple will share their experience about which species work, best management practices, and the scale required for profitability. Participants will identify which species are better for the backyard than the market and which might be the viable niche for their land.

No registration required for the free program.
