FHS speech team presents ‘Nights of Theatre’

Jan 24, 2018

The Fairfield High School speech team had successful day at the Iowa High School Speech Association’s District Large Group Speech Competition Saturday: the team of 43 speakers were entered in 15 events and earned Division I ratings in 14 of those events to advance them to the state competition Feb. 3 at Linn-Mar High School in Marion.

The team members’ performances can be seen live during “FHS Nights of Theatre” to be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and Tuesday in the FHS Auditorium.

Different performances will be presented each night.

The performances are free and open to the public, but donations are accepted to offset royalties, scripts, entry fees and several miscellaneous expenses.

Performances consist of a one-act play, two ensemble acting groups, the scripted events in Choral Reading and Readers Theatre, three group improvisations, two group mimes, three musical theatre groups, and two short films.

Head coach Fred Hucke remembers a time back in 1997 when the team was very proud of a sweep at the district competition.

“I think it was the first year that Betsie Wotherspoon was approved by the school board as my assistant,” Hucke said. “We called it ‘the year of sevens.’ We took seven groups to contest, we rode bus No. 7, all seven groups advanced to state, and I thanked the seven members of the school board for approving Betsie Wotherspoon for pay as an assistant coach.

“Twenty-one years later, Jolene Bullis is our new coaching assistant, Betsie is still coaching, and her daughter Noel is volunteering her time as well.,” Hucke continued. “It’s very gratifying to think of how happy we were then for seven groups to know that this year we’ll be taking twice that.”
