Firework injures Eldon man

Jul 06, 2018

ELDON - A man was seriously injured by a firework Wednesday night and was airlifted to a Des Moines area hospital.

According to a Wapello County news release, the incident occurred at 9:24 p.m. in Eldon, and the victim was a 36-year-old man. Wapello County Chief Deputy Donald L. Phillips said the man was injured when he picked up a firework that he believed was a dud after it failed to detonate after being lighted.

This is the second year fireworks have been legal in Iowa. Phillips said residents shot off fireworks even before they were legal, but they were more discrete about it. He said he’s not aware of any other injuries from fireworks in Wapello County.
