Buch hit a jumper with 1:54 remining in the first half to pass Amy Breen Cox as the Fairfield girls’ basketball 5-on-5 all-time leading scorer. Buch finished the game with 14 points to give her 1,403 for her career with at least three games remaining.

Senior point guard for the Fairfield girls, Nicole Buch, spent three years playing for boys’ current head basketball coach Mick Flattery, before spending her final season learning from Brian Witzenburg. The two coaches spoke with The Fairfield Ledger following Nicole’s record setting evening.

Talk about what tonight means from your perspective.

Mick Flattery: I’m very proud of her for her persistence. She’s always the first gal on the scouting report that everyone dictates their gameplan towards. She’s put in all the time that you need to have in order for these great things to happen. She’s made many, many, many layups in this gym and all around the area. Nicole has certainly put in the time and she deserves it, so I’m very happy for her.

Nicole is setting herself up for a smooth transition to college, how do you think she’ll do with the change?

Flattery: It’s going to be a new ballgame for her because there are a lot of “hers” at any college. The demand is going to be a lot greater, obviously not only on the court, but in the classroom since she wants to get into nursing. She’s six hours away and you hope that any kid that you send away with their work ethic that they used in athletics, now transfers that over to real life and the classroom, and I’m sure she will.

Talk about the moment finally happening.

Brian Witzenburg: We were very excited for Nicole to break the record. It was something everyone has been talking about all year, so it was great for her to be able to achieve that goal.
