VICKI TILLIS/Ledger photo “I didn’t lie,” Sharpay Evans (Charity Trent) proclaims as she claps her hand over her brother Ryan Evans’s (Cade Campbell) mouth in Fairfield Middle School’s production of “Disney’s High School Musical Jr.” Showtimes will be 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the FMS Cafetorium.

Fairfield Middle School will present “Disney’s High School Musical Jr.” at 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the FMS Cafetorium.

The story revolves around two students, Gabriella Montez (Alyson Reid) and Troy Bolton (Logan Nelson). She is a “brainiac” set to compete in a science decathlon. He is a “jock” ready to play in the basketball playoff game. And they both want lead roles in East High School’s upcoming musical.

That’s the problem. Many of the students, along with Coach Bolton (Maxwell Weaton) — who just happens to be Troy’s dad — think jocks should be jocks and brainiacs should be brainiacs; find a clique, do what they do, and don’t deviate.

Sharpay Evans (Charity Trent), president of the thespian club, is one of the students who feels that way. She’s ready to sabotage Gabriella and Troy’s audition — not only to keep them in their respective cliques, but to keep them apart since she has a crush on the basketball star.

But a few kids, and drama teacher Ms. Darbus (Hypatia Wagener) think everyone should be able to do whatever they would like even if it is against the status quo.

FMS teacher and drama coach Tena Edlin said the message of the show is: be true to yourself.

“I couldn’t dream up a better theme for a middle school show,” she said.
