Thursday was a joyous time for attendees to the Greater Jefferson County Foundation’s annual banquet, where 27 organizations received $137,000 in grants.

The banquet was held in the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center, where guests gathered for a meal catered by Top of the Rock Grille, followed by the presentation of awards. Matthew Eakins of the Batavia Fire Department was the featured speaker of the evening. Eakins thanked the foundation for its generous grant to the Batavia Fire Department, which will allow it to, among other things, purchase a gas detector to find natural gas leaks.

The purpose of the foundation is to provide grants to nonprofit organizations for capital expenditures and operational expense projects.

President of the Foundation Ken Malloy was unable to attend Thursday’s banquet, but had this to say in a press release:

“The grant committee was very pleased with the receipt of a total of 37 applications requesting more than $260,207. That was a difficult selection when you are able to just fund 53 percent of the total dollars requested. The committee always looks at the total impact to the community each grant will have, and this weighs greatly on our final selection process.”

The guidelines from the state require that 25 percent of the total go to the General Grant Fund of the local foundation representing the county. The grant committee of the Greater Jefferson County Foundation has designated a percentage be distributed to the following organizations:

• The ARC of Jefferson and Nearby Counties, for disbursement according to Charlotte Hammans’s will

• Agapeland Child Care for playground fencing

• American Red Cross for disaster relief for Jefferson County

• Band Aides of Fairfield Public Schools for a 7-foot-by-14-foot trailer

• Batavia Volunteer Fire Department for spanner wrenches and gas detector

• Community Child Care Center for a computer

• Education Foundation of Fairfield Public Schools for classrooms

• Fairfield Arts & Convention Center for operational expenses

• Fairfield Pool & Gym Task Force for the construction of a new facility

• Fairfield Babe Ruth for limestone for the infield

• Fairfield Beautification Commission for plant replacement around Central Park

• Fairfield Little League for safety equipment

• Fairfield Media Center for its broadcast streaming

• Fairfield Park & Recreation Foundation for Phase II of Howard Park electrification

• Fairfield Police and Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office for level 4 stand-alone rifle plates

• Fairfield Public Library for its AWE Early Literacy Stations
