Free camp offered to brothers, sisters of children with cancer

Aug 03, 2017

DES MOINES — Camp Heart Connection Sibling Camp is Aug. 13-19 at the Des Moines Area YMCA Camp in Boone.

The camp is the flagship program of Children’s Cancer Connection, a nonprofit organization based in Des Moines. The organization was founded in 1988 to help pediatric cancer patients and their families in Iowa and surrounding states, regardless of treatment outcome or years of treatment. Services are provided at little-to-no cost for individuals and families.

Siblings are typically not the center of attention when it comes to childhood cancer, but they still carry the scars of cancer inside. The free sibling camp, one of the few in the nation, allows siblings to experience a week they can call their own. They can reconcile their emotions and meet others who’ve lost a sister or brother to cancer.

According to Children’s Cancer Connection, many children from the area will be attending the camp.
