Feb 06, 2018

A “Feeding Higher Quality Cattle” seminar” is planned from 5:30-8 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Jefferson County ISU Extension office.

Topics include genetic selection for increased quality grade and performance; management techniques to enhance quality; purchasing higher quality feeder cattle; using carcass ultrasound to check marbling; and grid marketing and capturing carcass premiums.

Patrick Wall, ISU beef specialist, will give the welcome and make introductions. He also will speak on “Selecting for Marbling.” Erika Lundy of ISU will speak on “Research Review of Quality Grade.” The producer panel includes Mike Hora of Washington, Iowa, and Eric Gerdes of West Point, Iowa.

Admission is free. A free meal will be provided by the Jefferson County Cattlemen’s Association. Registration is due by Feb. 15.

For registration or information, call the Jefferson County ISU Extension office at 472-4166 or email Wall at patwall@iastate.edu.

A central Illinois native, Wall came to ISU via Black Hawk East and the Livestock Judging program. He received his bachelor and master degrees in animal science from ISU in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Wall’s graduate work was in carcass ultrasound, a technology that helped shape his career.

After a year as a junior college coach and instructor, Wall helped manage The CUP Lab in Ames for more than four years, overseeing the training of lab and field technicians. Wall spent an additional four years as the director of genetic improvement for the American Shorthorn Association, developing four $Value Indexes still used by the breed today.

In 2013, Wall joined the Iowa Beef Center team at ISU Extension & Outreach as a beef specialist for southeast Iowa. He leads team efforts in genetics, selection, and technology transfer to beef production.

In addition, Wall organizes the educational program for the annual Cornbelt Cow-Calf Conference and is the coordinator of the new Iowa Cowmaker Elite Heifer Development Program.
