May 15, 2017

DES MOINES – Whether you are graduating from high school or college or looking to make a career change, the Future Ready Iowa website features a wealth of resources to help you plan your future.

This mobile-friendly website, www.futurereadyiowa.gov, is designed to make it easy to explore different careers; learn about the education and training programs available to help you pursue those careers; find out about resources to help pay for that education and training; and search available positions to find the right job opportunity for you. The main feature of the site is Iowa’s Career Coach, which provides you with information, by job title, to help you make the best decision you can in choosing a career path. Among other things, this information includes: wages you can expect to earn, current demand, and future outlook. You are also able to select your location so that the wage and demand information you see is specific to the area that you choose.

Career Coach also outlines the training required for each career and where in Iowa you can get that training. If you are not sure of your career path, the Career Assessment on the site helps you determine what jobs are best for you based on your interests. If you are ready to start job hunting, the resume builder is an easy-to-use tool to help you create a professional resume.

For example, let’s say you live in Spencer and want to find out about career opportunities in your area. By indicating 51301 as your ZIP code and setting a geographic range of 50 miles, you can then choose the “Hot Jobs” link on the homepage see a list of jobs that are both high paying and in high demand in the Spencer area.

Or, maybe you live in Ottumwa and want to learn about manufacturing jobs within 20 miles of your ZIP code, 52501. After setting your location, type manufacturing into the “Search careers” field to reveal an assortment of career options. Drilling further into each career provides information about typical job tasks, pay, growth, the impact expected retirements will have on job openings. You will also be connect to training programs available in Iowa that are related to the career you are researching. In addition, you can connect to current job openings in that field with local employers.

Iowa Workforce Development Director Beth Townsend encourages students, parents and job seekers to leverage the Future Ready Iowa website to help explore career opportunities in Iowa.

“The Future Ready Iowa website is rich with up-to-date data regarding careers in Iowa,” Townsend said. “Iowans can easily research hot jobs in the area of Iowa they want to live. You can also find out where to get training and education for your career. Future Ready Iowa is a State of Iowa initiative to help Iowans get education and training beyond high school so they have the qualifications for jobs that are in-demand and pay a living wage. Careers today and in the future require advanced knowledge and technical skills beyond what is learned in high school.

The goal of Future Ready Iowa is for 70 percent of Iowa’s workforce to have education, training or recognized certification beyond high school by 2025. The Future Ready Iowa Alliance is currently developing a strategic plan to help reach that goal. The strategic plan is due to the governor by Oct. 317.

Iowans who want one-on-one help with their career search are encouraged to visit their local IowaWORKS Center to collaborate with a workforce professional.
