Two young Fairfielders, 11-year old Lachlan Gaskell and his sophomore sister Yana, made the nine hour drive with their dad Mark to Oklahoma City the first weekend of Septembter with the hopes of returning with a trophy.

Lachlan was the top seed in the 12U tournament and captured the Missouri Valley Supers title.

Gaskell defeated Gregor Wiedeman of Prairie Mission, Kansas 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 and then Topher Thornberry of Kansas City 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 in the championship match.

“Lachlan’s victory caps a strong summer that saw him competing in national and regional events in Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Florida, Alabama, and Michigan,” said his coach Steve Briggs.

Lachlan winning the Super qualifies him for the National Indoor Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York with the top 64 players around the country playing over Thanksgiving weekend.

“Yana also had an outstanding tournament,” added Briggs.

Gaskell defeated the No. 6 seed Randi Hendrick from Kansas City 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 before losing in the quarterfinals to the runner-up.
