Jefferson County Conservation and Fairfield Park and Recreation are joining together this year for Fairfield’s Great Cardboard Regatta Aug. 11 at Bonnifield Lake in Waterworks Park.

Registration is at 9 a.m., and the regatta begins at 10 a.m.

The challenge? To design and construct a human-powered boat made of corrugated cardboard capable of racing a 200-yard course three times. The judges will be looking for lots of fun and interesting entries. Awards will recognize creative use of cardboard, team spirit, best-dressed team, spectacular designs, and more.

Boats need to be constructed in advance of the competition and must pass a technical inspection the morning of the event. No metal, wood, fiberglass resins, plastic or plastic epoxies, Styrofoam, etc. are allowed in the construction of the boats. Only corrugated cardboard, duct tape, glue, latex caulking and outdoor paint are allowed. Polyurethane for a topcoat is optional.

Teams can be made up of two to eight crew members. Kids 8 years and older can be on the crew, but all crews must have an adult 18 years or older in the boat during competition.

The entry fee is $5 for individuals, families, and nonprofit youth groups like 4-H and Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. The entry fee is $20 for organizations and businesses.

Teams can register the morning of the event. Registration and boat inspection is at 9 a.m. Races begin at 10 a.m., and spectators are welcome.

Any business or organization interested in participating in this summer’s cardboard regatta can contact Art Atkinson at 919-3979 or dreamlife@lisco.com. Atkinson participated in the previous two regattas and has created an eight-minute humorous talk with slides to inspire employees or members to participate in the fun event. Contact him to come and talk to a group.
