This year, 15 contenders are in the running for seats on the Fairfield Community School District’s board of directors and The Ledger will showcase each one of those candidates with a mini-profile from now until just before the election, which is Sept. 12.

Candidates were given the opportunity to respond to five questions. Today’s showcase features Cathy Giberson, who is vying for one of three four-year seats.

1.Please briefly explain what prompted you to run for a seat on the Fairfield Community School District board of directors?

What prompted me to run for the Fairfield Community School Board was listening to kids who wanted a voice, parents and teachers needed someone to listen to them. But most of all, I want to give back to my community that gave me a great education. I feel that our children coming up deserve a great education as well.

2.What do you think the current board is doing right? Are there any areas that you think the board could improve upon?

I feel that our school board is working hard at keeping the technology up and giving students MacBook Airs to do their studies on, but the greatest thing is advanced placement classes are preparing our students to excel when enrolling into colleges. Letting those students get a jump on their careers. Where they can work in their careers, such as nursing.

3. If elected to the school board, what assets would you bring to the table?

As a school board member, I could bring listening skills. I want to hear the whole story from all parties. I also have a part-time roll as an educator, such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, first aid, mandatory reporting abuse and other adult continuing education to keep [my] Emergency Medical Services certification up to date. I have also served on other boards and I have helped with writing policies and working on state grants.

4. What is your stance on the latest hot-button issues, such as grade alike, Libertyville Elementary School closing etc.?

My stance on grade alike is I think it is a good move. If we have to move one group of students into Fairfield everyone can move at the same time. The teachers can put their resources together, and if they have a child who is having difficulties, they can ask for assistance from another qualified teacher. I feel that all children should have the same education and no child should be left behind.

I feel that what makes me unique is I’m a good listener. I like to find solutions to problems. I feel that I would work well with others for TEAM WORK is my motto.
