Golfers nab six wins at Albia Invite

Apr 10, 2013

ALBIA — Mick Flattery’s Trojan golfers got their first look Tuesday at what figures to be a season-long rival in Centerville.

The Big Reds claimed battle No. 1 at the Albia Invite by finishing seven strokes ahead of the Trojans, who were coming off a 43-stroke victory vs. Eddyville Monday. Centerville shot a 317 compared to Fairfield’s 324.

“It was great competition between ourselves and Centerville, as it looks it will be that way all year long,” said Flattery. “The guys were disappointed that we left several 3-foot putts out there knowing how close the final would be.”

Both teams smoked the rest of a field consisting of six other area teams. Albia claimed third place with a score of 351, and Maharishi School finished with a 373 for fourth place.

Tuesday, junior Matt Carr again led the Trojans with the team’s lowest score and the third lowest score among all golfers. Carr fired an 18-hole tally of 78 and accounted for three of the Trojans’ seven birdies on the day.

Playing like anything but a rookie, freshman teammate Nick Higgins was right behind with a 79 to continue his impressive start to the season. Higgins score placed him fourth overall in the large field, and Flattery praised Higgins’ short game as a “real asset” Tuesday. The Trojan freshman opened the day with a team-low round of 36 before finishing the day with a 43 on the back nine.

Juniors Joe Hietpas and Alex Shier each recorded one birdie on the day and finished next lowest for Fairfield. Hietpas carded an 83 while Shier shot an 84 to round out the team score.

Alternate scores were posted by senior Gabe Hull (84), who Flattery said putted the ball “very well,” and Landon Gamrath (89).

“A lot of good things happened. The opening round of 36 by Nick was terrific, and Matt’s back nine of 38 was good,” said Flattery. “I thought the 83 and 84 out of Joe Hietpas and Gabe Hull were very good confidence builders for those two.”

With the six wins and one loss Tuesday, the Trojans now sit at 7-1 on the young season. They will get their first look at Southeast Conference rivals Washington and Fort Madison at a triangular in Washington next Tuesday.
