Greater Jefferson County Fair has arrived

By Andy Hallman, Ledger news editor | Jun 25, 2018

Saddle up, partner. We’re going to the fair.

The Greater Jefferson County Fair begins today and runs all this week featuring animals, exhibits, tasty food, carnival rides, a rodeo and more.

Local 4-Hers are having their interviews today for their bucket-bottle calf and clothing projects. Things pick up Tuesday when the public is invited to witness the 4-H/FFA horse show beginning at 8 a.m. in the horse arena at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds.

The fair parade is that night at 6:30 p.m. from the high school to Central Park. That will be followed by a Flag Day ceremony courtesy of Fairfield Elks, and finally the Fairfield Municipal Band will serenade the crowd from 8-9 p.m.

From Wednesday through Sunday, the fun won’t stop from sun-up to sun-down. Each day will bring multiple 4-H/FFA shows, games for kids and grandstand entertainment in the evening.

Jefferson County Fair Board President Steve Fritchen said the fair has many new sights to offer visitors. A new grandstand act is Thursday’s Ranch Rodeo, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Fritchen said it will showcase talented kids from the area who will demonstrate how to sort cows on horseback and other tricks of the trade.

Youngsters will ride bareback sheep around the show arena during Mutton Bustin’ at 7 p.m. Thursday, another new activity.

“Kids won’t have a hard landing because they’ll be falling on sawdust,” Fritchen said.

Helicopter rides are back at the fair. Fritchen also noted that there will be more carnival rides than before.

The Kidde Pedal Tractor Pull has become a staple at the fair. Willard Hoskins of Hawkeye Pedal Pull has run the competition for 25 years. The event is 6 p.m. Friday in the show arena.

Fritchen commented that several grandstand acts such as the quad races, tractor pull and demolition derby consistently bring great crowds, and they’re all back for 2018.
