Hawkeyes lose freshman guard to knee injury

Women’s basketball: Kate Martin suffered a torn ACL and lateral meniscus
By Jeff Linder, The Gazette | Jun 18, 2018

IOWA CITY — Kate Martin, likely the top incoming freshman for the Iowa women’s basketball team, will miss the season due to a torn ACL and lateral meniscus in her left knee, suffered last weekend.

A 6-foot guard from Edwardsville, Ill., Martin averaged 16.2 points and 5.9 rebounds last season for Edwardsville High School, leading the team to a 30-2 mark and a fourth-place finish in the Illinois Class 4A state tournament after a runner-up campaign in 2017.

She finished her career with 1,516 points and led her school to a four-year record of 122-6. She was a first-team all-state selection.

Martin will redshirt the 2018-19 season and will have four years of eligibility remaining, starting in 2019-20. She will undergo surgery in late June.

The injury leaves Iowa (24-8 and an NCAA tournament team last year) with a roster of 12, including freshmen Logan Cook, Monika Czinano and Tomi Taiwo.
