Hearing next week on Branstad pick to be China ambassador

Committee hearing will be May 2
By Ed Tibbetts, Quad City Times | Apr 26, 2017

Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad's hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to be ambassador to China will be held next Tuesday.

The committee announced Tuesday afternoon that the hearing will be at 9 a.m. Central Time on May 2. It will be webcast on the committee's website.

The announcement comes nearly five months after President Donald Trump announced that he had selected Branstad for the job. The governor's office said last week that Branstad would travel to Washington, D.C., on Wednesday and Thursday of this week for meetings related to to his confirmation.

Over the past several weeks the timing of the hearing, as well as a confirmation vote, has been a matter of speculation, as the governor has made plans to transition to a new job and the state has prepared for Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to take his place.
