Helen E. Smyth

Dec 19, 2013

Helen E. Smyth, 93, died Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, in Tucson, Ariz.

Ms. Smyth was an avid proponent of math. She traveled around the world on sabbatical leave to see how math was being taught in different countries, bringing home the best techniques to implement in her classrooms.

San Diego students voted math taught by her, as their favorite subject.

While working as the math specialist at Maharishi School for the Age of Enlightenment, she took the elementary students from non-competitors in math to state champions.

She loved to travel and by the time she retired from teaching and tutoring at age 89, she had taught school in the Philippines, Japan, Venezuela and Africa, as well as in California, Hawaii, Arizona, North Carolina and Iowa.

Survivors include one son and one granddaughter in Tucson, Ariz.
