History Day

May 22, 2013

Three Fairfield Middle School students, from left, Savannah Kelley, Anuja Pharasi, and Dayna Price receive their State History Day competition awards from, left, Iowa Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs director Mary Cownie May 6 at the State Historical Museum in Des Moines. The three girls researched, wrote and performed a piece called “Nellie Bly: Benefiting Humanity One Word At a Time” about the life and accomplishments of Nellie Bly. Their teacher, Tena Nelson, said their project made finals in the group performance category, which was the first time FMS students had ever qualified for the finals at State. They presented their performance again in the afternoon with five other groups in the finals and found out at the awards ceremony they had qualified for Nationals. “They are thrilled to represent their school and their state,” said Nelson. The National History Day Contest will be June 9-13 at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. To help cover costs for their travel and room and board at National History Day, approximately $2,270, Nelson and the students are accepting donations by check and credit card at https://secure.piryx.com/donate/Mj6e3vmY/FMS-GOAL/nationalhistoryday.
