Horse trail work planned

Oct 14, 2013

FARMINGTON — The all-volunteer group Friends of Shimek Equestrian Trails will hold a work day at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Anyone who can volunteer should meet work day coordinator John Byrd and Lora Conrad at the Lower Campground in the Lick Creek Unit of Shimek State Forest. Lick Creek is a few miles east of Farmington on Highway 2. Meet at the first small loop area at the campground entrance for team and task assignment.

Activities planned include, as top priority, the completion of the new horse shelter at the lower campground. This means installing stable walls and gates. Also needed are volunteers to clear downed trees, paint restroom facilities and pick up trash and cans along trails and in the campgrounds.

For more information and to sign up, contact Byrd at 319-878-3811 or Conrad at lpconrad@wildblue.net.

The Friends of Shimek blog also has more information on the plans at http://friendsofshimek.blogspot.com/.
