Hundreds turn out for slain Iowa officer’s funeral

Sep 18, 2013

ROCKWELL CITY (AP) — Hundreds of police officers and firefighters from across Iowa and neighboring states were among an estimated 2,000 people who attended the funeral of a Rockwell City police officer who was killed in the line of duty.

While the crowd inside the South Central Calhoun Middle School gym in Rockwell City on Tuesday mourned the loss of eight-year police veteran Jamie Buenting, those outside the doors in the community of 2,200 honored his memory with signs, wreaths and ribbons, the Des Moines Register reported.

Buenting, a 37-year-old married father of two, died early Friday after he was shot during a standoff. Corey A. Trott, 32, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Buenting’s death.

On Tuesday, Buenting was remembered as a loving husband and father who enjoyed hunting and the outdoors. Besides his career as a police officer, Buenting owned and operated Iowa Firearms Safety and Tactics and was a member of the regional Special Emergency Response Team.

Pictures projected on a screen Tuesday showed him in the outdoors with his children and teaching family members how to shoot.

But it was the words of his 7-year-old daughter that brought most of those at the funeral to tears.

Kalie Buenting read from a note she penned after learning of her father’s death, describing him as “the best ever,” and asking God to “make sure he gets the best place in Heaven.”

Jamie Buenting was buried in Rosehill Cemetery later in the day, and police officers gave him a 21-gun salute. His children released white doves as bagpipes played “Amazing Grace.”

Clinton County Sheriff’s Reserve Deputy Bill Hall closed the ceremony by playing taps on his bugle.

“It’s a very important time for the family,” he said. “Taps can be played very mechanically. It can be played with a digital beat. From my perspective, I play it from my heart.”
