Hunter Education class scheduled in Fairfield

Sep 20, 2017

A free Hunter Education class is set from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 7 at the Southeast Iowa Skeet Club north of Fairfield.

Anyone who plans to attend must register online by going to http://register-ed.com/programs/iowa.

Anyone 11 years old or older can enroll in the class. An 11-year-old who successfully completes the class will be issued a certificate that becomes valid on his or her 12th birthday.

Before the class, students should pick up a Hunter Education booklet from the Jefferson County Park office or the Jefferson County Recorder’s Office in the Jefferson County Courthouse and complete the questions at the back of the book.

Hunter Education is a mandatory program that is designed to introduce students to several lifelong skills that are important to many different types of outdoor recreational opportunities. The course teaches students basic survival and first aid skills, water safety, wildlife identification, and the basics of wildlife management, hunting laws, and firearm/archery safety.

Hunter Education also stresses the importance of individual responsibility and outdoor ethics.

Iowa law requires that anyone born after Jan. 1, 1972, be certified in Hunter Education before they are eligible to purchase an Iowa hunting license.

For information about the hunter education class, call instructor Dan Henderson at 319-653-1636.
